Hiába előzte meg Lewis Hamilton a rajtnál a pole pozícióból induló Max Verstappent, majd vezetett a futam szinte egészében, az utolsó körökben a pályára kellett küldeni a biztonsági autót, az újraindításkor pedig Verstappen megelőzte Hamiltont, s ezzel elhódította az egyéni világbajnoki címet Abu-Dzabiban.
Hatalmas izgalmakkal telt már az szezonzáró időmérője is, amelyen Max Verstappen került kisebb előnybe, hiszen a Red Bull holland versenyzője hódította el a pole pozíciót. Mellőle viszont a világbajnoki riválisa, Lewis Hamilton vághatott neki az idény utolsó versenyének, a második rajtsorból Lando Norris és Sergio Pérez várhatta a piros lámpák kialvását.
A rajtnál máris eltűnt Verstappen előnye, hiszen Hamilton meg tudta előzni őt, s ezzel az élre állt. A holland nem sokkal később megpróbálta visszaelőzni a riválisát, a két autó egy kicsit össze is ért, de mivel Verstappen nem hagyott elég helyet Hamiltonnak, vissza kellett adnia az első pozíciót.
A következő körökben Hamilton lassacskán ellépett Verstappentől, akinek a hátsó gumijai már a 10. körben elkezdtek elkopni. Négy körrel később ki is hívták friss gumikért, de a Mercedesnél is reagáltak – Hamilton a 15. körben járta a bokszutcát. A kerékcserék után átmenetileg Pérez állt az élen, Hamilton a második, Verstappen pedig a negyedik pozícióban autózott.
Az első kiállások ráadásul Hamiltonnak kedveztek, hiszen Verstappen kissé beragadt Carlos Sainz Jr. mögé, így több másodpercet veszített Hamiltonnal szemben. Azonban amikor a brit utolérte Pérezt, a Red Bull versenyzője mindent elkövetett annak érdekében, hogy feltartsa Hamiltont.
Hiába jött össze viszonylag gyorsan az előzés, Pérez visszatámadt, és kétszer is visszaelőzte Hamiltont. A Red Bull terve bevált, hiszen Verstappen utolérte az élen autózó kettőst. Pérez azonnal el is engedte a csapattársát, aki üldözőbe vette Hamiltont, ám a hátránya inkább nőtt, nem pedig csökkent.
Féltávnál technikai probléma miatt fel kellett adnia az utolsó F1-es versenyét Kimi Räikkönennek, néhány kör múlva azonban Antonio Giovinazzi alatt a másik Alfa Romeo is megadta magát. Ekkor ráadásul virtuális biztonsági autós korlátozás lépett érvénybe, mely alatt Verstappen kiment a bokszutcába egy újabb kerékcserére, Hamilton azonban kinn maradt a pályán.
Miután feloldották a korlátozást, Verstappen megkezdte a felzárkózást Hamiltonra, de nem ment neki olyan gyorsan, mint azt szerette volna. Még akkor is csak viszonylag keveset tudott hozni a hétszeres világbajnokon, amikor az forgalomba került a lekörözendő versenyzők között.
Amikor már úgy tűnt, hogy kezd minden eldőlni, Mick Schumacherrel csatázva Nicholas Latifi a falnak csapta az autóját, így a pályára kellett küldeni a biztonsági autót az utolsó körökre. Verstappen ismét kiment egy kerékcserére, Hamiltont ezúttal sem hívta ki a Mercedes.
Bár az utolsó körökben még ment némi tanakodás a versenyigazgatónál azzal kapcsolatban, hogy visszavehetik-e a körüket a lekötözött versenyzők, Michael Masi végül megengedte nekik, így Verstappen közvetlenül Hamilton mögül várhatta az újraindítást az utolsó körben.
Amikor aztán megkapták a zöld jelzést, Verstappen megelőzte Hamiltont, aki bár visszatámadt, a holland nem engedte maga elé, s az első helyen szelte át a célvonalat, ezzel pedig elhódította a 2021-es világbajnoki címet. A konstruktőrök között azonban a Mercedesé lett az elsőség.
Verstappen mellé Hamilton és Sainz állhatott fel a dobogóra, pontot szerzett még Cunoda Juki, Pierre Gasly, Valtteri Bottas, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon és Charles Leclerc.
