A hétvégi Miami nagydíj előtt bekeményített a Forma-1-et és az autóversenyzés legfelső kategóriáit szabályozó testület, az FIA: megtiltották a pilótáknak az ékszerviselést az autóban, kifejezetten kiemelve a piercingeket és a nyakláncokat. A szabályozás 2005 óta volt életben, de most először kezdenék el szigorúan betartatni a pilótákkal, a Formula-E (elektromos versenyszéria) múlt heti, monacói futamán már több pilótát meg is büntettek nyakláncviselés miatt.
A mezőny közismerten legnagyobb ékszerviselője és divatszerelmese, a mercedeses Lewis Hamilton láthatóan zokon vette a döntést, pénteki sajtótájékoztatójára a hétszeres világbajnok ugyanis három karórát, nyolc gyűrűt és három nyakláncot viselve érkezett, majd azt mondta: ennél többet nem tudok magamra venni.
Hamilton arról nyilatkozott, hogy a most először Miamiban megrendezett futamot „örömmel kihagyja”, ha az ékszerei miatt nem versenyezhet, és szívesen mászkál a városban, amíg a csapat harmadik számú pilótája átveszi a helyét. Szerinte visszalépést jelent a döntés, és ennél sokkal fontosabb és nagyobb dolgokra kéne fókuszálnia a versenyigazgatóságnak. Egyetértett vele az AlphaTauri francia pilótája, Pierre Gasly is, aki elmondása szerint nem érzi magát biztonságban a kocsiban a vallása miatt fontos nyaklánca nélkül, és az FIA meg kellene hagyja az ékszerviselést egyéni döntésnek, lévén a pilóták a saját életüket teszik kockára, így az ő felelősségük. Hamilton egyébként csak az orrpiercingjét és a fülbevalóit viseli verseny közben – ezek azok az ékszerei, amelyeket nem tud önállóan eltávolítani.
Az FIA egyébként azzal indokolja a döntést, hogy egy baleset esetén az ékszerek megnehezíthetik az orvosi segítségnyújtást, elősegíthetik az égési sérüléseket, és beleakadhatnak a pilóta maszkjába és overáljába, ha azt vészhelyzetben le kell rántani.
A Forma-1-es Miami nagydíj időmérőjét magyar idő szerint szombat este 21 óra 40 perctől, a futamot pedig vasárnap este 20 óra 55 perctől rendezik.
