A szezon kilencedik nagydíjának a listavezető, Andrea Kimi Antonelli vágott neki az első helyről, mellőle pedig Charles Leclerc indult, miután több nehéz hétvége után saját elmondása szerint az időmérőn végre „megtalálta a helyes irányt.”
Lewis Hamilton a harmadik, George Russell a negyedik rajtkockára állhatott fel, a második sort tehát két hazai versenyző tette teljessé – a céljuk egyértelmű volt, a sor elejére vágni.
A Max Verstappent legyőző Isack Hadjar indult az ötödik helyről, Lando Norris, a Brit Nagydíj tavalyi győztese volt a hatodik. Verstappen a hetedik, az élmezőnyt pedig Oscar Piastri zárta.
Ami az üldözőket illeti, az időmérőt közülük ismét a Racing Bulls uralta, így a csapat mindkét pilótája a legjobb tízből vágott neki a versenynek. Az élete első hazai futamára készülő Arvid Lindblad a kilecendikről, Liam Lawson a tizedikről.
A Ferrari remekül kezdte a versenyt: Leclerc az első, Hamilton pedig a második helyre ugrott a rajtnál, Antonelli viszont nem engedte elszakadni a vörösöket.
Ott loholt Hamilton nyomában, miközben a csapattársnak, a negyedik helyen álló Russellnek inkább hátra kellett figyelnie a Red Bull kettősére, Hadjarra és Verstappenre, majd a harmadik kör után Verstappenre és Hadjarra – a holland ugyanis leelőzte csapattársát.
Az indulás nagy vesztese Piastri volt, akinek autója megsérült a tülekedésben, ennek hatására pedig a mezőny végére csúszott, sőt, még egy orrkúpcserét is végre kellett hajtani autóján a boxban.
Az első körök „nyugalmasan” teltek az élen, Leclerc magabiztosan őrizte két másodperc körüli előnyét a csapattárssal szemben, aki szintén tartani tudta Antonellit, igaz, a fiatal olasz közelebb volt hozzá, mint ő a márkatárshoz.
A Ferrari és Hamilton számára a nyolcadik kör hozott egy nem várt fordulatot: a hétszeres bajnok 5 másodperces büntetést kapott, amiért bemozdult a rajtnál. Ezt első cseréje során kellett letöltenie.
Antonelli a tizenegyedik körben aztán elszánta magát, hogy még a pályán eldönti a második pozíció sorsát és le is tudta előzni ferraris riválisát. Az élen álló Leclerc előnye a manőver után mégy másodperc volt, a fiatal olasznak ezt kellett ledolgoznia, ha a győzelemért is harcolni akart.
Leclerc előnyét a következő körökben nem tudta csökkenteni, Hamiltont viszont sikeresen leszakította: a brit klasszis hátránya a tizenhetedik körben már három és fél másodperc volt.
A kerékcserék sorát Verstappen nyitotta a tizennyolcadik körben – rögtön azután, hogy a pályán maga mögé utasította Russellt.
Hamilton és Russell a huszonnegyedik körben „reagált”, mindketten hosszabb első etapot futottak tehát. Verstappen a Mercedes és a Ferrari pilótáját is lehagyta, viszont számolhatott azzal, hogy a folytatásban mindketten gumielőnyben lesznek.
Ami a két brit versenyzőt illeti, a sorrend közöttük változott, Hamilton ugyanis letöltötte az öt másodperces büntetést.
Leclerc az élről a huszonötödik körben állt ki, Antonelli viszont kinn maradt a pályán és hosszúra nyújtotta első etapját, amelynek a végén versenyképese köröket futott.
Az utolsó dobogós pozícióért egy hármas csata alakult ki, Russell és Hamilton kettőse ugyanis folyamatosan csökkentette lemaradását Verstappenhez képest. Az első manővert Hamilton hajtotta végre, megelőzve honfitársát, Russell viszont azonnal reagált és visszavette pozícióját.
A hétszeres bajnok a következő körben újra lecsapott, de a forgatókönyv ugyanaz maradt: Russell a „jojóeffektus” értelmében visszatámadhatott és újra riválisa elé került.
A harmincnegyedik körben Russell indított támadást Verstappen ellen, a négyszeres bajnok viszont őrizte pozícióját. A csatának egy lassú defekt vetett véget, ami miatt Russellnek úra ki kellett állnia kereket cserélni és egészen a hetedik helyig esett vissza Norris és Hadjar mögé.
A franciát gyorsan visszaelőzte, honfitársa előnye viszont hét másodperc volt, de a futam végén ő jelentős gumielőnyben volt.
A harminchatodik körben Antonelli cseréjére is sor került: az olasz hátránya ezt követően hét és fél másodperc volt, ezt kellett ledolgoznia Leclerc-rel szemben a frissebb gumikon. Ezt jelezte is, két kör alatt ugyanis két másodpercet hozott a monacóin.
Hamilton eközben ott folytatta, ahol Russell abbahagyta: támadta Verstappent a harmadik helyezésért. A harmincnyolcadik körben aztán sikeresen végre is hajtotta a manővert, visszaverekedte magát a dobogóra.
A harminckilencedik körben egy virtuális biztonsági autós fázis (ezt Nico Hülkenberg kiesése miatt rendelték el, akinek az autója egy műszaki hiba miatt állt meg) változtatott a verseny dinamikáján, ezt ugyanis Verstappen és Norris is kihasználta egy „olcsóbb” kerékcserére.
A holland Russell elé jött vissza és hátránya csak tíz másodperc volt Hamilton mögött, de gumielőnye jelentős. Norris Russell mögé került, de ő is jó tempóval támadhatott a hajrában.
A negyvenkettedik kör aztán újabb drámát hozott! Antonelli autója lelassult, az olasznak ki kellett állnia a boxba, amivel értékes pozíciókat veszített, majd két körrel később újra, amikor megsérült az első szárnya.
Kiállásai után Antonello csak tizedik volt, ráadásul pályaszélesítés miatt öt másodperces büntetést kapott.
A negyvennyolcadik kör újabb drámát hozott! A Hamiltont űző Verstappen kicsúszott a tizenötös kanyarban, és mivel a kavicságyban ragadt, pályára küldték a biztonsági autót. Ezt a Ferrari azonnal kihasználta és mindkét versenyzőjét kihívta kereket cserélni.
Russell viszont a pályán maradt, így a második helyre került Hamilton elé, és abban bízott, hogy a versenyt már nem indítják újra.
És végül bejött a Mercedes számítása, a mezőny ugyanis (egy kisebb zűrzavar után, a lekörözötteket ugyanis elengedték, majd úgy tűnt, az utolsó kör egy „sprintfutamot” hoz, az SC viszont nem tűnt el a sor elejéről) a biztonsági autó mögött futott be.
Leclerc nyert tehát, véget vetve a 2024 óta tartó rossz sorozatának. Russell lett a második, Hamilton a harmadik – ők ketten ezzel jelentősen csökkentették lemaradásukat Antonellivel szemben, aki a büntetéssel végül csak tizenhatodik lett.
Norris negyedik, Hadjar ötödik lett, majd a Racing Bulls kettőse jött újabb erős, kettős pontszerzéssel a hatodik és a hetedik helyen. Pontot Bortoleto (az Audi most másodszor ért célba a legjobb tíz között) valamint Franco Colapinto és Pierre Gasly gyűjtött még. A bajnokság egyhetes szünet után Belgiumban folytatódik!

A hatalmas baleset Pierre Gasly fedélzeti kameráján követhető a legjobban, aki előtt ütközött George Russell és Csou. Először Russell kerekei összeértek az Alpha Tauriéval, ettől nagy sebességnél megpördült a Mercedes és nekiment Csou autójának, amely többször megpördült a tengelye körül. Egy későbbi felvételen pedig az látszott, hogy Csou autója a megpördülések után átrepült a gumifalon és belecsapódott a nézőket védő kerítésbe.
Rajtuk kívül kiesett Alexander Albon is, akit Sebastian Vettel állított a falba, és Esteban Ocon autója szintén megsérült az irányíthatatlanul pattogó Williams miatt. Albont szintén kórházba vitték ellenőrzés céljából.

A hatszoros világbajnok az utolsó körben kapott defektet, így igencsak sérült bal első gumival szelte át a célvonalat. Hamilton csapattársa, Valtteri Bottas két körrel hamarabb járt hasonlóan, és pont nélkül zárta a silverstone-i versenyt. A dobogóra Max Verstappen (Red Bull) és Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) állhat fel Hamilton mellé.
„Majdnem megállt a szívem” – ez az a mondat, amit nem nagyon hitte senki, hogy elhangzik a győztes Lewis Hamilton szájából, hiszen egészen az utolsó körig azt csinált a mezőnnyel, amit csak akart. De elhangzott, méghozzá jogosan, hiszen az utolsó körben defektet kapott, és onnantól kezdve a „túlélésért” küzdött.
A szívroham pedig megállíthatatlanul jött érte Max Verstappen személyében, aki talán szerencsétlenségre a vége előtt beugrott új gumikért, hogy bizonyosan elkerüljön egy defektet és megfuthassa a leggyorsabb kört. Mindkettő sikerült, azonban, ha nem cserél, akkor a győzelemre is esélye lett volna, de Hamilton olyan hősiesen küzdött a végén, hogy a holland nem tudta beérni, és így a defektes brit versenyzőt intették le elsőként.
Az egészet Valtteri Bottas defektje vezette fel (no meg mások szenvedése, és defektje, is, melyek már figyelmeztető jelek voltak), aki végül pontot sem szerzett, mert neki nem volt olyan szerencséje, mint márkatársának. Rosszabb helyen és rosszabb időben kapta a nem várt pofont. Így már harminc pontos hátrányt halmoz fel Hamiltonhoz képest, ami két egyforma autó között eléggé soknak mondható.
Hamilton és Verstappen mögött a dobogóra Charles Leclerc fért még fel, aki igazán meggyőzően hajtott, és egyáltalán nem került olyan áldozat szerepbe, mint márkatársa, Sebastian Vettel, akit többen is megelőztek a futam során. A német aztán a defektes versenyzők (Bottas, Sainz) miatt visszaverekedte magát az éppen pontszerző 10. helyre.
Nem ez volt minden idők legizgalmasabb versenye, de azért voltak szép csaták a mezőny közepén, elején. Általában Lance Stroll volt védekező szerepben és sokáig nem is tudott átlépni rajta az őt támadó Esteban Ocon, de később tovább lassult a Racing Point és Pierre Gasly is belépett a csatába, csak gyorsabban végzett vele. A végén az az Alexander Albon is elkapta a rózsaszín autót, aki a futam elején összeakaszkodott Kevin Magnussennel, ami miatt 5 mp-es büntetést kapott.
Külső szemlélőként inkább volt az incidens a Haas csapat versenyzőjének hibája, de a bírák ma kicsit furcsán döntöttek talán több esetben is. A mai napra jellemző például a fekete-fehér zászló, ami egy olyan figyelmeztetés, amit sportszerűtlenség miatt lengetnek meg, és utána már a kizárás következik. Magnussen nem kapott ilyet, de helyette a márkatárs igen, és még kapott mellette az ezúttal védekező testtartást felvevő Lance Stroll is.
Két biztonsági autó is próbált tenni azért, hogy izgalmasabb legyen a Brit Nagydíj. Az elsőt a Magnussen-Albon ütközés idézte elő, a másodikat pedig Daniil Kvyat kiesése. Izgalmat azonban az a szakasz nem hozott, miután Valtteri Bottas nem nagyon akarta megtámadni márkatársát, a többieknek pedig nem is nagyon volt rá esélye.
Jövő héten ismét silverstone-i futam, csak ezúttal 70. évfordulós Nagydíj néven érkezik, és egy kicsit talán megkeverheti a lapokat, hogy más gumikeverékekkel futhatnak a versenyzők. Persze, ha nem nyúlnak bele a tervekbe a biztonság kedvéért.
