A 71 éves Karpovot hétfőn este súlyos sérülésekkel szállították a Szklifoszovszkij idegsebészeti klinikára, ahol azóta is az intenzív osztályán ápolják súlyos fejsérülésekkel. A sakkozó képviselője, Andrej Kovaljov azt mondta, hogy a parlamenti képivselőként dolgozó Karpovot az Állami Duma épülete előtt megtámadták és összeverték. Tény, hogy koponyasérülése és bal combcsontjának törése támadásra is utalhat.
Ugyanakkor az Izvesztyija című lap információi szerint a köztudottan alkoholista Karpovnak rendkívül magas 2,76 ezrelék volt a véralkoholszintje, amikor beszállították.
A tisztánlátást nem könnyíti meg, hogy ahányan nyilatkoznak, annyifélét állítanak, így a sportág 12. világbajnokának felesége és lánya is egymásnak ellentmondó állításokkal bombázza a sajtót. Míg a lánya, Szofija szerint Karpov az otthonában esett el és verte be a fejét, addig felesége, Natalja Bulanova egy meglehetősen kétes sztorival állt elő.
Elmondása szerint szombaton sétálni ment a férjével, amikor egy idő után arra lettek figyelmesek, hogy Karpov sántítani kezdett. Azt hitték, hogy a lábával történt valami, ezért bementek a sürgősségire, ahol megállapították, hogy a fején van egy kisebb vérömleny, ezért benntartották, de nincs nagy baj, és hamarosan haza engedik. Abban hasonlít a két sztori, hogy a feleség szerint sem történt támadás, Karpov egy otthoni esés következtében szerezhette a fejsérülését.

A 24 éves angol sportoló a 15 kilométeres scratch versenyszám selejtezőjében megpróbálta kikerülni azokat a riválisait, akik összeütköztek és elestek, ám kisodródott a rendkívül nagy dőlésszögű pályán, kerékpárjával áthajtott a lelátó korlátján, és a nézők közé zuhant.

Csou Kuan-jü felborult az Alfa Romeóval, és percekig nem mutattak semmit a közvetítésben, hogy mi lett vele, ami mindig ijesztő, de a versenyirányítás és az Alfa Romeo megerősítette, hogy a kínai versenyző eszméleténél van, sikerült kiemelni a roncsból. Hordágyon vitte a mentő kórházi kivizsgálásra, de állítólag nincs csonttörése.
A hatalmas baleset Pierre Gasly fedélzeti kameráján követhető a legjobban, aki előtt ütközött George Russell és Csou. Először Russell kerekei összeértek az Alpha Tauriéval, ettől nagy sebességnél megpördült a Mercedes és nekiment Csou autójának, amely többször megpördült a tengelye körül. Egy későbbi felvételen pedig az látszott, hogy Csou autója a megpördülések után átrepült a gumifalon és belecsapódott a nézőket védő kerítésbe.
Rajtuk kívül kiesett Alexander Albon is, akit Sebastian Vettel állított a falba, és Esteban Ocon autója szintén megsérült az irányíthatatlanul pattogó Williams miatt. Albont szintén kórházba vitték ellenőrzés céljából.

Ráadásul az eset után a dél-afrikai versenyző úgy hajtott tovább, mintha mi sem történt volna, miközben a chilei motoros a földön feküdt, és láthatóan komoly fájdalmakkal küszködött.
A Dakar-ralit 2009-ben megnyerő Ginier de Villiers egy szorosban próbált átkelni, de ott volt előtte a chilei César Zumarán, aki éppen próbálta beindítani a motorját. A dél-afrikai azonban cseppet sem törődött a chilei versenytársával, akit hátulról felöklelt. Az eset után Zumarán kikecmergett a Toyota terepjáró alól, de Villiers úgy hajtott tovább, mintha ez a világ legtermészetesebb dolga lenne, miközben Zumarán láthatóan megsérült az ütközésben.
A gázolás után a sportfelügyelők vizsgálatot indítottak, de végül csak egy 5 perces büntetéssel sújtották a dél-afrikait, miközben sokan azt szerették volna, hogy kizárják a versenyből.

Mivel az eset – 46 kilométerrel a cél előtt – a mezőny elejében történt, több mint 50 versenyző volt érintett a bukásban. A földre kerültek között volt az esélyesek közül a szlovén Primoz Roglic, de ő folytatni tudta a versenyt. Kevésbé volt szerencsés a német Jasha Sütterlin, akit kézsérüléssel kórházba szállítottak és feladni kényszerült a viadalt, míg a spanyol Marc Soler teljesítette ugyan a szakaszt, de másnap már nem állt rajthoz, miután a vizsgálatok mindkét karjában törést mutattak ki.
A történtek után a baleset okozója eltűnt a helyszínről, de pár nappal később feladta magát. Az ügyészség négy hónap felfüggesztett börtönbüntetést kért rá gondatlanságból elkövetett testi sértés és közveszélyokozás miatt. A tárgyaláson elhangzott, hogy a vádlott felismerte tette súlyát és sajnálja a történteket.
A Tour de France szervezői nem terveznek további jogi lépéseket,

Vizsgálatot indított a Nemzetközi Olimpiai Bizottság (NOB) a pekingi ötkarikás szánkópálya üzemzavara miatt súlyos sérülést szenvedett Mateusz Sochowicz ügyében. Ifj. Juan Antonio Samaranch, a jövő évi téli játékok koordinációs bizottságának vezetője támogatásáról és együttérzéséről biztosította a 25 éves versenyzőt, egyben ígéretet tett arra, hogy a vizsgálat nyomán felmerülő szükséges változtatásokat időben megteszik a februári olimpia előtt.
„Ez egy nagyon szerencsétlen helyzet. A pályát és a baleset körülményeit a sportági szövetség és a szervezőbizottság is komoly vizsgálat alá vetette. Ha vannak levonható tanulságok, mint ahogy feltehetően vannak, idejében le fogjuk vonni azokat, és végrehajtjuk a szükséges változtatásokat”– ígérte Samaranch. Hozzáfűzte ugyanakkor, hogy a pálya az azt használó két szakági szövetségtől előzetesen kiváló minősítést kapott a minőségi és biztonsági szempontokra egyaránt.
Sochowicz a hétfői edzésen a biztonsági előírásoknak megfelelően, a zöld jelzést követően indult el, a lecsúszás során azonban az egyik kapu zárva maradt. A sportoló észrevette az akadályt, és megpróbálta átugrani, de az ütközést nem tudta elkerülni. A szánkósnak eltört a bal térdkalácsa és a kapu csontig hatolóan elvágta a jobb lábát, a baleset után azonnal megműtötték.
„Ha nem reagáltam volna ilyen gyorsan, akkor tragédiába is torkollhatott volna az eset” – mondta Sochowicz. Hozzátette, hogy a pályán dolgozók nem tudták, miként segítsenek, ezért fél órán keresztül feküdt a jégen, mielőtt kórházba vitték.
A szánkós abban bízik, hogy szabadkártyát kaphat a nemzetközi szövetségtől a februári téli olimpiára, és akkor kizárólag a felépülésére koncentrálva még lehet esélye indulni. A 2018-as pjongcsangi játékokon Sochowicz a 28. helyen végzett a férfi egyéni versenyszámban.
Szánkópályán legutóbb a 2010-es, vancouveri olimpián történt tragédia, akkor a georgiai Nodar Kumaritasvili életét vesztette, amikor edzésen nagy sebességgel egy vas tartóoszlopnak csapódott.

Ezzel megszerezte pályafutása 99. futamgyőzelmét, egyben nyolcadik alkalommal diadalmaskodott hazai pályán.
A verseny legemlékezetesebb pontja azonban nem ez, hanem a Max Verstappennel történő ütközés az első körben, aminek következtében a listavezető a gumifalba csapódott, és kivizsgálásra kórházba szállították. Hamiltont később 10 másodperccel büntették a Copse-ban történtekért, de szerinte ő semmit nem csinált rosszul.
Mindig próbálok megfontolt lenni, főleg Max esetében, aki nagyon agresszív – nyilatkozta a leintés utáni interjúk során. – Ma teljes mértékben mellette voltam, és nem volt elég helyem. Azonban függetlenül attól, hogy egyetértek-e a büntetéssel, elfogadom azt, folytatom a munkát, és nem hagyom, hogy bármi is az utamba álljon.”
A hétszeres világbajnok győzelméhez csapattársa, Valtteri Bottas is hozzájárult, aki elengedte őt, hogy üldözőbe vehesse Leclerc-t. Hamilton nem csupán a finn pilótát, hanem az egész istállót, valamint a hétvégére kilátogató közönséget is méltatta.
„Számomra álomszerű, hogy ezt előttetek értem el. Valtteri remek csapatmunkája, valamint az istálló erőfeszítési nélkül ez nem sikerült volna. Az elmúlt héten mindent beleadtam, voltam a gyárban, és a srácokkal próbáltuk növelni az autó teljesítményét.
Mindenkire büszke vagyok, és folytatjuk a munkát, még akkor is, ha némileg hátrányban vagyunk.”
A baleset után Leclerc állt az élre, és a monacói pilóta a motorproblémák ellenére végig vezette a versenyt. Azonban annak ellenére, hogy később kapta meg a kemény keverékeket, riválisa utolérte és ugyancsak a Copse-ban meg is előzte őt. A monacói pilóta még nem tud felhőtlenül örülni a 2. helynek.
„Nehezen tudom teljes értékben élvezni [a helyzetet] – kezdte. – Nyilván hihetetlen futamom volt, nemhogy száz, de kétszáz százalékot beleadtam, mindent kihoztam magamból, de ez az utolsó két körben nem bizonyult elégnek. Gratulálok Lewisnak, elképesztő munkát végzett, és nagyszerű látni, hogy mennyien vannak a lelátókon.”
Leclerc dicsérte az autó teljesítményét, de hozzátette, egy kicsi még mindig hiányzott a diadalhoz. Ugyanakkor így is sokkal jobb tempót produkált, mint ahogyan azt a verseny előtt gondolta. „Egyáltalán nem számítottunk rá – válaszolta az erre vonatkozó kérdésre. – Az időmérő után azt gondoltuk, hogy elég versenyképesek leszünk, de nem ennyire, mint most, elvégre a győzelemért harcoltunk, ami hihetetlen. Főleg a közepeseken voltunk gyorsak, utána a keményeken kicsit elmaradt a tempónk a Mercedesétől, de összességében sokkal erősebbek voltunk, mint amihez hozzászoktunk.”
Leclerc Hamiltonhoz hasonlóan méltatta saját csapatát, és kijelentette, szerinte nagyszerű munkát végeznek, amire végtelenül büszke. Hangsúlyozta, hogy az ehhez hasonló eredményeknek lelkesítő hatásuk van, ugyanakkor nem lesz egyszerű visszakapaszkodniuk a csúcsra.
Bottasnak nem sikerült jól a rajt, ám a bokszkiállások során vissza tudta szerezni a pozíciót Lando Norristól, köszönhetően a McLaren elrontott kerékcseréjének. Ennek viszont az volt az ára, hogy a leintéshez közeledve nem volt elég gyors.
„A rajtnál kipörögtek a kerekeim, kicsit úgy, mint Lewisnak tegnap, ez pedig valamelyest megnehezítette a helyzetet – magyarázta. – Lando kerékcseréjére nyilván reagálnunk kellett, emiatt túl korán álltunk ki ahhoz, hogy a végére versenyképesek maradjunk. Legalább Landót megelőztük, Lewis pedig nyert.”

Az olasz bajnok Sonny Colbrelli és a belga Wout van Aert is esélyes lehetett volna a szakaszon, de a bukás miatt lemaradtak az élbolyról, nem tudtak harcolni a szakaszgyőzelemért. Az Ineos-Grenadiers két fontos versenyzője, Richie Porte és Tao Geoghegan Hart is benne volt a bukásban, mindketten sok időt vesztettek emiatt. A Critérium du Dauphiné versenyt június elején megnyerő Porte több mint két perc hátrányt kapott a szakaszon, a tavalyi Giro-győztes Geoghegan Hart öt perc felett kapott.
A Tour-címvédő Tadej Pogacarnak a jobb keze sérült meg kicsit, de így is hatodik lett a szakaszon. Svájci csapattársa, Marc Hirschi nem volt ilyen szerencsés, ő súlyosabban sérült, 18 perc hátrányt szedett össze, és a 180. helyen ért célba.
„Bepereljük ezt a nőt” – mondta Pierre-Yves Thouault, a Tour igazgatóhelyettese az AFP-nek. „Gondoskodnunk kell arról, hogy a show-t ne árnyékolja be a nézők kisebbségének elfogadhatatlan viselkedése” – tette hozzá a verseny biztonságért felelős igazgatóhelyettes.
Az Ouest-France regionális újság szerint a sárga dzsekit viselő nő a bukás után elmenekült a helyszínről, és egyelőre nem találták meg. A finistére-i csendőrség a Facebook-oldalán azt írta, hogy a baleset miatt eljárást indítanak. „A balesetet okozó néző még a nyomozók kiérkezése előtt elhagyta a helyszínt. Szemüveget, kék farmert, piros-fehér csíkos pulóvert és sárga esőkabátot viselt” – írták.
A cél előtt 7,5 kilométerrel egy másik nagy bukás is történt, a nagyot esőt litván Ignatas Konovalovas (Groupama-FDJ) és a francia Cyril Lemoine (B&B Hotels) szintén feladni kényszerült a versenyt.
