Stephen Kenny váltja az ír labdarúgó-válogatott kispadján Mick McCarthyt.
A szigetországi szövetség szombati bejelentése szerint az amúgy is tervezett váltás azonnali hatállyal életbe lépett. McCarthy 1996 és 2002 között már irányította az ír nemzeti együttest, másodjára pedig 2018 novemberében nevezték ki, megbízatása az idei Európa-bajnokság végéig, azaz július 31-ig szólt, utána váltotta volna Kenny. Ugyan a kontinensviadalt jövő évre halasztották a koronavírus-járvány miatt, a cserét viszont a terveknek megfelelően végrehajtották, így a szintén elhalasztott, jelenleg szeptemberre tervezett pótselejtezőn már az új szakvezető irányítja majd az ír csapatot.
Az írek a szlovákokkal találkoznak a pótkvalifikáción, siker esetén pedig az északír-bosnyák párharc győztese várna az együttesre az Eb-részvételért.
