Ugyan George Russell, a Mercedes brit versenyzője nyerte a vasárnapi Forma–1-es Belga Nagydíjat, de a futam után a brit autója megbukott a versenyt követő ellenőrzésen, így elvették a győzelmét.
A Belga Nagydíjat George Russell nyerte, aki mindössze egy kerékcserével csinálta végig a 44 körös versenyt. A futam után azonban vizsgálat indult ellene, mivel a futam utáni ellenőrzésen az ellenőrök úgy találták, az autója nem érte el a 798 kg-ban meghatározott minimumsúlyt azt követően, hogy üzemanyagmintát vettek belőle a leintés után.
A sorozat honlapja arról számolt be, hogy mivel a brit autója könnyebbnek bizonyult a megengedett minimum tömegnél, így elvették tőle a futamgyőzelmet és a hivatalos győztes a csapattársa, a hétszeres világbajnok Lewis Hamilton lett.
A Silverstone-ban szintén győztes 39 éves brit pilótának ez az idei második, pályafutása 104. futamgyőzelme.
Az eset után Russell a közösségi oldalán érthetően csalódottan reagált a büntetésére.
„Szívszorító… 1,5 kilogrammal volt könnyebb, és ezért kizártak. Ma mindent beleadtunk a pályán, büszke vagyok arra, hogy elsőként haladtam át a célvonalon. Lesz ilyen még többször is” – írta a brit.
Russell kizárása miatt Oscar Piastri, a McLaren ausztrál pilótája lett a második, míg harmadikként a monacói Charles Leclerc zárt a Ferrarival.
A világbajnoki idény a nyári szünetet követően az augusztus 25-i Holland Nagydíjjal folytatódik.
