Izgalmas felvezetés előzte meg a melbourne-i kvalifikációt, a harmadik gyakorláson ugyanis négy versenyző is egy tizeden belül zárt.A leggyorsabb Charles Leclerc volt a Ferrarival, majd a címvédő, Max Verstappen jött a Red Bull-lal, aki mindössze 20 ezreddel maradt el a monacóitól. De minimális volt a szaúdi futamot vakbélgyulladás – és műtét – miatt kihagyó Carlos Sainz és Lewis Hamilton hátránya is.
Biztató volt az is, hogy az utolsó edzésen Hamilton és George Russell révén a Mercedes meg tudta közelíteni a Red Bull és a Ferrari kettősét.
Ahogy a harmadik gyakorlásnak, úgy az időmérőnek is csak 19 versenyző vágott neki, miután az alkatrészhiánnyal küzdő Williams visszaléptette Logan Sargeantet, hogy autójába a vezetőség elemzése szerint jobb pontszerzési esélyekkel rendelkező Alexander Albont ültesse.
Albon a Q1-ben ezt továbbjutással hálálta meg: a thai a hetedik leggyorsabb körrel verekedte be magát a második etapba.
Ez az időmérőkön általában jól teljesítő Nico Hülkenbergnek, Pierre Gaslynak, Daniel Ricciardónak és Csou Kuan-jünek nem jött össze. A hazai közönség számára a nagy csalódást minden bizonnyal Ricciardo kiesése jelentette, főleg azt követően, hogy az ausztrálnak volt továbbjutó ideje, de azt pályaszélesítés miatt törölték, így esett vissza a kiesők közé.
A leggyorsabb kört a Q1-ben Sainz futotta, majd Sergio Pérez, Verstappen és Leclerc volt a sorrend. Fernando Alonso ötödik, Russell pedig hatodik helyezéssel nyitott. Ami a különbségeket illeti, azok továbbra is minimálisak voltak: az első három volt egy tizeden, az első hét pedig négyen belül.
Sainz a második etapot is az első pozícióban zárta, mögötte pedig a csapattárs, Leclerc végzett. Verstappen harmadik, Piasti negyedik, Pérez pedig ötödik volt.
Alonso egy hatodik helyezéssel jutott tovább, Norris hetedikként, miközben Stroll, Cunoda Juki és éppen csak hogy, de Russell is kiharcolta magának a Q3-at. Az edzésen még remeklő Mercedes „visszaesését” Russell tizedik Q2-es helye mellett a nagy meglepetés, Hamilton kiesése is igazolta.
A hétszeres világbajnok mellett Albon, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen és a tizenötödik helyével az Alpine idei legjobb időmérős eredményét szállító Esteban Ocon búcsúzott a második etap végén.
A Red Bull a Q3-ban „vágott vissza” – a bikások első gyors körükkel jelezték, nagyon is harcban lesznek a rajtelsőségért. Verstappen állt ugyanis az élre az első menet után, ráadásul majd’ három tizedet adott a második pozícióban álló Sainznak.
Közte és a csapattárs között minimális, egy tizedes volt a különbség, majd Pérez jött, aki már néggyel volt a címvédő mellett.
Az üldözők versenyét a McLaren vezette az utolsó körök előtt, igaz, az Aston Martin kettősének nem volt még mért köre.
Verstappen az utolsó gyors körön is javított, akárcsak Sainz – kettejük között dőlt el a rajtelsőség sorsa, mégpedig a holland javára, aki 270 ezreddel futott jobb kört a Ferrari versenyzőjénél. Saiznak tehát be kellett érnie a második helyezéssel, azután viszont, hogy két hete még vakbélműtétjére készültek, remek teljesítmény volt tőle az, hogy az első sorba vezette csapatát.
Pérez harmadikként árt, Norris végül feljött a negyedik helyre, az utolsó körén rontó majd azt megszakító Leclerc pedig csak ötödik lett. Mögötte Piastri, Russell, Cunoda, Stroll és Alonso volt a sorrend a legjobb tízben.

A 30 éves pilótának ez pályafutása 12. pole pozíciója.
Bottas mellől csapattársa, a címvédő és hatszoros világbajnok brit Lewis Hamilton startol majd, míg a harmadik rajtkocka Max Verstappené, a Red Bull holland versenyzőjéé lett.
Kiváló időmérőt futott Lando Norris a McLarennel, és Sergio Perez a Racing Point volánja mögött. Előbbi a negyedik, utóbbi a hatodik helyről kezdheti majd meg a futamot.
A Ferrari szempontjából beigazolódott a szakértők többségének a gyanúja, a maranellói istálló autója egyelőre nem tűnik igazán versenyképesnek. A monacói Charles Leclerc csak a hetedik, míg a négyszeres világbajnok német Sebastian Vettel csupán a 11. lett az időmérőn.
