Vasárnap a Persebaya Surabaya 3-2-re verte az Arema Malang együttesét idegenben, ezt pedig nehezen viselték a hazai drukkerek. Az Arema 23 éve nem kapott ki hazai pályán. A mérkőzés lefújás után a pályára rohantak, üvegekkel és egyéb tárgyakkal dobálták meg a focistákat és a játékvezetőket, a rendőrség pedig könnygázt fújt a tömegre – amelynek használatát a Nemzetközi Labdarúgó-szövetség (FIFA) betiltotta a stadionokban –, emiatt kitört a pánik. Mindenki a kijárat felé próbált rohanni, és a káoszban agyontaposták egymást az emberek.
A beszámolók szerint harmincnégyen már a helyszínen az életüket vesztették, a többiek a kórházba szállítást követően haltak meg.
A 174 halott mellett minimum 300-an kerültek még kórházba, többen súlyos sérülésekkel, így a halálos áldozatok száma valószínűleg nőni fog. A hírek szerint a zavargások nem értek véget a stadionban, rendőrautókat is felgyújtottak a szurkolók, a halottak között pedig két rendőr is van. Egyes médiaértesülések szerint gyermekek is vannak az áldozatok között.
„Több mint háromszáz embert szállítottak kórházba, de közülük sokan életüket vesztették út közben vagy a kezelés során” – mondta el Nico Afinta, Kelet-Jáva rendőrfőnöke vasárnapi sajtótájékoztatóján.
Az Indonéz Labdarúgó Szövetség azonnal lépett, és egy hétre felfüggesztette a BRI Liga 1 nevű bajnokság küzdelmeit.
