 Az F1-es pilóták közül eddig csak ketten érdemelték ki az elismerést, Niki Lauda 1977-ben, míg Sebastian Vettel 2013-ban, a negyedik vb-címe után. Hamilton kétszer lett az év brit sportszemélyisége, 2014-ben és 2020-ban. (Előtte Stirling Moss 1961-ben, Jackie Stewart 1973-ban, Nigel Mansell 1986-ban és 1992-ben, Damon Hill pedig 1994-ben és 1996-ban nyerte el a „fődíjat” a BBC gáláján – az 1964-ben F1-es világbajnok John Surtees 1959-ben gyorsaságimotoros-világbajnokként kapta meg ugyanezt az elismerést.)
